Skim Coat Plastering and Paint Preparation
Most of what people call paint defects are satin defects — the final coat's quality is decided at the burnishing stage.
- Raking-Light Projector Inspection
- Two-Coat Standard: Fill + Burnish
- Dust-Free Machine Sanding
- Contractual Workmanship Warranty

Skim coating is the finishing stage between base plaster and paint. It closes minor pores and surface marks and creates a more even background for primer and paint. The existing plaster is first checked for strength, moisture, cracks and plane deviation; defects that exceed the selected product's thickness limits are repaired separately rather than hidden under the finish coat.
The material and number of passes are chosen for the substrate and required finish. Each coat is allowed to dry as specified, then the surface is sanded where the system requires it and inspected under raking light. Corners, junctions and repaired areas are checked before primer, leaving a consistent surface ready for the agreed paint system.

The Challenges You Face, Our Fix
RISK 01: Waves and shadow marks appearing after painting
SOLUTION: After burnishing we sweep the surface with a projector and correct every shadow-casting point before painting.
RISK 02: Joint-tape lines and screw points showing as shadows through paint on drywall
SOLUTION: We skim the complete surface with a compatible finish coat, then prime it uniformly to reduce visible differences in texture and absorption.
RISK 03: Paint consumption running higher than expected
SOLUTION: A pore-free burnished satin surface absorbs paint evenly — the standard 2 coats are enough, no third coat needed.

Get a Project EstimateFrequently Asked Questions
Is skim coating necessary, or can the wall be painted directly?
Painting straight over base plaster gives a porous, wavy result; every lit wall shows its flaws. The satin layer pays for itself both aesthetically and economically — less paint consumed, longer paint life.
Does drywall need a satin coat?
Yes — joint tapes and screw points absorb differently from the board surface; without a full satin skim, paint reveals the difference like shadows.
Can satin go over old paint?
Over sound matte surfaces, yes, after a bonding primer; glossy (oil) paints are abraded first. We never skim over flaking paint without scraping it back.
How long does satin work take in an apartment?
A standard two-bed apartment (walls + ceilings) takes 3–5 working days including two coats and sanding; bundled with painting, the total shortens.
